  1. WOW—Dude,,,,, forget the house studio setup. ….you need a band first!!! and then a clue. sorry but i have had many different bands set-up in my house and i never heard this question before. seems to me that musicians just naturally know their craft. But hey—–Good Luck !!!.Its a tough business.

  2. As much as I want to say the same thing elnt55 said, I wont because I understand a little about where you must be coming from. You probably don’t play music or haven’t been playing for long, and you think that it sounds like a lot of fun to start up a studio. First off, elnt55 is right to say that you need some experience before you do anything, but I don’t agree that you have to start a band or be in a band in order for it to work for you. Of course, being in bands for years and gaining experience that way is the best way to understand what kind of people musicians tend to be in general, and how to deal with them (not easy, but it can be fun). It’s true – the majority of people running studios have been in bands at least at some time in their lives, but who’s to say you can’t break some convention and start your own thing? All you need is a lot of money – after all, your question never said anything about being SUCCESSFUL at it. :) I am joking. Of course you want to be successful, so I’ll try to explain this very simply: No person in their right mind will sit here and tell you all of the things you need to get a studio running. There are far too many to list in one day, month, or year, and all studios are different depending on what you want to do. Studios are built and grow based on a demand for certain things over a long period of time. The single most important piece of advice I could give you is to start out small, learn your trade, and grow from there. A great way to start for a beginner is to learn what’s out there. The internet is always a great source. For example:

    http://www.recordingwebsite.com/articles/

This place has great articles on the pieces of gear that are typically found in small studios, as well as a few articles on how to set up your computer for digital recording, and much more.

I would also highly recommend subscribing to this free magazine:

    http://www.tapeop.com/

It has great articles from the smaller guys (without the big egos) who are doing great and innovative things. You can learn a lot about the music industry, the guys who run the studios, and the musicians that they are recording.

Well, hopefully that gets you started in some positive direction. Good luck.
