If I'm taking private lessons from a teacher in a music store, and I gel with the teacher but can't stand the vibe of the music store, is it kosher for me to (indiscreetly) ask the music teacher if they teach elsewhere?

I wouldn't want the store accusing the teacher of poaching clients so they have a reason to fire that teacher.

Thanks for your advice.

You certainly have the right to ask, and don't be afraid to mention to the teacher that you don't like the atmosphere of the store (communication is always the most important thing!) However, some teachers are under a contract that does not allow them to teach else where. If that's the case, you will have to get a different teacher to get out of that environment. You should discuss with the teacher what specifically you don't like about the store and see if any adjustments can be made to fix it.

you said that you spent 4 years studying music. did you become a musician just after high school?
Because most of us we started at around 7

The recession hit my area this time in June. I went down in students for the summer months and then it never went back up. I have had a few new students since then. I normally average about 25- 30 students. I am down to 15-20. This is the same way that it went for me at the start of the last recession (I have been teaching for 30 years). The students will come back a few months before the absolute end of the recession.

Well, I'm a teacher. There's the obvious, the Radio. Top 40 billboard charts. MTV/VH1. You tube. Google. There's a cd compilation my teacher used called NOW. It's basically the season's most popular (pop). I use Limewire, because I can find different singer's versions and it has more variety than i tunes. (Caution!) Limewire might have viruses or adult content. I never search for videos there: only Audio. You might have to filter junk. There might be dance teacher play-list recommendations on the web, like from the dance magazines. I buy ballroom cd's and ballet cd's. as for jazz/lyrical, that's easy. for kids, disney etc. I like oldies/vintage/world too. Bye!

I have a BA in education and want to be a music teacher in a HS or College. I prefer to teach adult music in college.
I have some questions if your a teacher.

1. would there be any problems getting a college music position/ is there a high need?
2. Can i make a good living doing this?
3 do i need a PHD? Can i do this with a BA?
4. What area of music is in demand to be taught in college?

Thanks

1. Those getting music positions at the college level tend to hold on tight, especially to get tenure. It depends on the location, the university, etc.
2. You can make an adequate living. It also depends on what you consider a good living. Small universities may have more openings but they pay less usually.
3. You need a Masters working toward a PHD to get into a position and a PHD to keep a position. BA for high school.
4. The more areas of music you are competent in the more marketable you are.

I have experience of teaching before, but now I am doing it on a more professional basis, and I wondered if anyone out there had any tips on what they do in their lessons? I have started with warming up, then going onto pieces - afterwards concentrating on something like tone or expression. I teach adults at the moment, but I'll eventually be teaching children too.

I used a similar structure when teaching.

Warm up - few exercises. Then I reviewed what they'd done the previous lesson. Played the scales they'd been practicing and the pieces they'd been learning. See if they had any questions or concerns about the previous week. Picking up any points from what they'd been practicing and working on areas that were weaker. Then give them new things to work on for the next week (but depending on what needed work from the previous week).

I always gave a summary sheet at the end including things to practice for the week ahead, so they had a written record (some of my adults found it easy to forget what they were supposed to be practicing!

It varies a great deal from student to student, so just get stuck in and good luck!
